Also known as 'Upakarmam' it signifies the beginning of the study of Vedas. The day marks one of the most auspicious events for the Brahmin community. It is believed that it was on Avani Avittam that Lord Vishnu, incarnated as Lord Hayagriva, restored the Vedas stolen by the asuras to Lord Brahma.
In the Hindu mythology, this day is considered very auspicious as Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Hayagriva, the God of knowledge, on this day. Lord Hayagriva was the one who reinstated the Vedas to Lord Brahma. This day is also celebrated as Hayagriva Jayanti.
Avani Avittam is a most important ritual for Brahmins. It is a ceremony of changing the sacred thread (poonal). I have been told by my father that the right name for this ritual is Upakarma and over a period of time it gets a name “Avani Avittam”. It has been observed on different date by different brahmin communities.
The Yajurveda Upakarma day (known as Avani Avittam in Tamil) is the day when the Brahmin men change the sacred thread, Janeyu/ Yagnopaveetham (known as Poonal in Tamil).
Sama Vedic Upakarma is observed on the day after Shravan Amavasya on Hastha nakshatra thruteeya. Sometimes this might occur on Ganesh Chaturthi. Irrespective of the Veda, Gayatri Japa is observed on the day after Yajur Upakarma by all.
"Yajus" means "sacrificial formula" and Yajurveda is the book of sacrificial prayers. It contains the rituals and hymns of the Yajnas.
This day is also celebrated as Hayagriva Jayanti. Avani Avittam holds immense importance to Yajur, Sama and Rig Vedic Brahmins. Avani Avittam is also celebrated as the day to express gratitude towards the Rishis for the spiritual knowledge and ancestors for their existence.
The word Avani implies the Tamil month and Avittam is one among the 27 Nakshatras. Brahmin communities in all corners of the world observe the Avani Avittam ritual with full dedication and devotion.
