On this auspicious day, relatives and friends collectively pray for intermittent supply of water that would ultimately result in a good harvest. The devotees take a dip in the holy water. After the bath, they wear new clothes and perform some rituals at the bathing ghats along the Cauvery River.
On the day of Aadi Perukku, women folk worship Goddess Parvati. Different flavours of rice such as sweet Pongal, curd rice, tamarind rice, lemon rice etc.
Aadi Perukku is a Hindu festival mostly celebrated in the state of Tamil Nadu on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi in order to pay tribute to the life-sustaining properties of water.
Aadi is a month that is dedicated to the goddess. We, as devotees, worship her fervently during this month. Tuesday, Friday and Sunday are considered to be the auspicious days in Aadi.
I checked with few astrologers and they say that one can shift house or do house warming in the month of Aadi but just on one particular day alone . It is on 18th of Aadi . They claim the day is auspicious.
The popular choices are Lemon Rice, Tamarind Rice or Puliyodharai, Curd Rice, Sakkarai Pongal (sweet Pongal) and Ven Pongal. You can also serve Coconut Rice, Vadai etc along with this. The prasadam is offered to everyone at home as lunch. Aadi Krithigai is celebrated worshipping Lord Karthik or Murugan.
Alternatively, those who can't visit temples, can perform the same ritual at home and pray to the goddess. The Fridays in the Aadi month are auspicious to remember and worship your ancestors. On these days, there's a practice of worshipping the Neem tree in the morning after taking bath.
The 18th day of Aadi, usually 2 August, is observed as 'Aadi Perukku', a day of offerings and prayers to these rivers, which mean so much to the lives and prosperity of the people. The day is an occasion for rejoicing particularly for those living on the banks of all the main rivers, its branches and tributaries.
